The September issue of Boston magazine contains the annual ranking of the best public high schools in the Commonwealth. Wayland High School ranks 7th in this year's list, sharing top-tier status with comparable systems Weston, Dover-Sherborn, Concord-Carlisle and Lincoln-Sudbury and outpacing peers Wellesley, Westwood, Acton-Boxborough, Medfield and Bedford.
The rankings are based on indicators such as student-to-teacher ratio, per pupil spending, MCAS scores and improvement between grade levels, SAT scores, graduation rates, percentage of students continuing to higher education, and the number of advanced placement courses, athletic teams and extracurricular activities offered. While the underlying statistical measures and the methodology used to determine rankings are subject to debate as to whether the data captures the quality and value of a school, lists such as this are often cited by the media and used by realtors and others to provide a general sense of the quality of the local schools. Students, faculty and our entire community certainly can point with pride to such recognition as just one measure of the relative value of the Wayland school district.
